ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I (2-days) 6 CPD hrs.

The ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I course will benefit all personnel involved in testing fresh concrete. ASTM C94, ACI 301 and C31 all require that technicians making and curing concrete test specimens for acceptance be certified ACI Concrete Field Testing Technicians. A working knowledge of the following ASTM Standards is required for this certification program:

C-172 Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete;
C-143 Slump of Hydraulic Cement Concrete;
C-138 Density (Unit Weight), Yield, & Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete;
C-231 Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by Pressure Method;
C-173 Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by Volumetric Method;
C-31 Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field;
C-1064 Temperature of Freshly Mixed Portland Cement Concrete.

The Ohio Ready Mixed Concrete Association's (ORMCA’s) Professional Engineers conduct the one-day review. The written and performance examinations are administered by a Professional Engineer and graded by the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

Technicians successfully completing both the written and performance examinations will receive a certificate and wallet card from ACI certifying them as an ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I (certification expires in 5 years).

ACI requires successful completion of both the performance and written examinations, for individuals desiring recertification. Individuals may register for “Exam Only”, however it is recommended that they register for the “Accelerated Course,” to review the current standards covered on the exam.

ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I exam is now reimbursable (up to $500) to Veterans through the GI Bill. NRMCA Pervious Concrete Contractor Certification (1 day) 2 CPD

This program is designed to educate, train and certify concrete finishers in pervious concrete placement. Ohio Concrete engineers will provide a half day classroom training necessary for the knowledge in pervious concrete materials and proper placement procedures in preparation for the written ‘Technician’ examination and performance evaluation following the training.

NRMCA can provide certification on these following three (3) levels:

A Pervious Concrete Technician is a person who demonstrated knowledge about proper procedures to place, compact, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect pervious concrete pavements, but who lacks the requisite field experience to qualify as a pervious concrete Installer or Craftsman.  This beginning level is intended for contractor and non contractor personnel in learning the proper techniques of installing pervious concrete.  It is assumed that contractor personnel who are certified as technicians will be supervised by an individual with a higher level of certification or expertise.

A Pervious Concrete Installer is a person who has demonstrated the ability to place, compact, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect pervious concrete pavements and has documented a limited project-based field experience in placing pervious concrete. Ohio Concrete must certify that the individual has successfully installed a minimum of three projects with a total area exceeding 10,000 SF of Pervious Concrete and has successfully completed the Performance Evaluation at the time of application. Installers are expected to assume leadership roles when installing pervious concrete and make decisions on placement conditions and procedures.

A Pervious Concrete Craftsman is a person who has demonstrated the ability to place, compact, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect pervious concrete pavements and has documented a higher level of field timebased experience in placing pervious concrete. In addition to the above Installer requirements, the Craftsman

must either provide documentation of 3000 hours of pervious concrete experience or complete the performance evaluation and document 1500 hours of experience. They must also possess a current ACI Flatwork Finisher Technician or Craftsman certification at the time of application.

Certification Requirements

The “closed book” written examination is allotted two hours to complete and consists of approximately 60 multiple-choice questions. The passing grade for the written examination is 75% During the performance evaluation, each examinee must demonstrate procedures for placing, compacting, finishing, edging, jointing

and beginning curing a pervious concrete slab. The examiner will observe and evaluate the techniques used and record passing or failing grades on the various procedures. A passing grade is defined as "no significant variation from proper procedure and no more than two variations from proper technique in the use of the

tools."

Recertification is required every five years and requires successful completion of a written examination.

ACI Standard Contractor Qualification (ACI 522.1-08)

The Contractor shall employ no less than; 5 NRMCA certified Pervious Concrete Technicians or 3 NRMCA certified Pervious Concrete Installers or 1 NRMCA certified Pervious Concrete Craftsman - as members of each

placement crew.
